| Lesson #1 Your Face, Your Canvas You don’t need an arsenal of cosmetics anymore to achieve a flawless complexion and healthy glow. In fact, with mineral makeup, you can achieve this look in 5 minutes or less. The secret lies in the techniques, which are timeless, emphasizing your natural beauty rather than relying on seasonal trends (which can look dated very quickly). The first step to achieving this look is by prepping the canvas, your face. It needs to be clean and well exfoliated to remove dry, flaky patches than can leave any makeup you wear appear cakey. Regular exfoliation with a gentle scrub or alpha-hydroxy acid (such as a glycolic or lactic acid) will do the trick. Hydration is the next step – adequate moisture is essential for a perfect makeup application. To avoid makeup creasing around the eye area, a good eye cream is suggested. Don’t forget the delicate skin of the lips – which need to be both exfoliated as well as hydrated to get a perfect pout. The next step after prepping the canvas is to look in the mirror and make a few observations about your particular coloring to determine which makeup pigments will work best for you. What color are your eyes? Your complexion (skin tone)? What size are your lips? Are they full, thin or medium size? What color is your hair? Making notes of these answers will give you a foolproof formula for selecting the perfect makeup. Although you can wear anything you are drawn to – there are some general guidelines that will make the best of your natural assets. We’ve all heard of the color wheel but do you know that understanding the rules of the color wheel will enable you to never make the wrong color selection again? How many times have you picked out a beautiful color of eyeshadow or lipstick at the cosmetic counter but hated it once you got home? The reason is because it looked great on your hand, not on your eyes or lips. When you are wearing the perfect shades of color, you will get compliments on your eyes and complexion as opposed to your ‘makeup’. The secrets of the color wheel can be simplified to this: Opposites attract. Because the majority of eye colors will fall into three colors: blue, green, brown, you will only have to know the exact opposite of your eye color. The opposite of blue is orange, the opposite of green is red and the opposite of brown is … it depends on what the primary color of the brown eye is. Example: hazel eyes are brown and green - so the opposite would be red. Some brown eyes have a beautiful orange hue – in which case the opposite would be blue. You may be thinking (if you have blue eyes) “I would never wear orange eye shadow” – rather than think of straight orange – think of a rich terracotta color. By wearing a color the is the exact opposite of your eye color you are in a sense making it stand out more. Example: A blue eye will never appear more blue than when placed against and orange hue. The same holds true with a green eye, you may not be a fan of a red eye shadow (or purple), but you may like a soft heather or lilac. In addition, there are many brow colors with a cool undertone that would work as well. Do you ever wonder why certain lipstick shades turn pink on you? Or why some colors make your lips appear small? Look at your lips with nothing on them. Are they naturally rosy? Or dark purple? Do you appear to be wearing lipstick when you have nothing on at all? If you do, then a lot of colors will turn pink on you – that is because the natural blue tone in your lips will turn most colors very pink. If you are seeking a more natural or warm tone, you will have to wear a color that is more orange or brown, in effect to neutralize the blue undertones of the lips. This is also the reason a lipstick color can look great on your friend and look horrible on you! The most flattering lip color is the one you are born with – which for most is a soft rosy/mauve color. If you want your lips to appear fuller – always use a light to medium tone with a gloss or shimmer to it. A common mistake is to wear too deep of a color, which in turn, makes your lips appear thin. A good way to remember this – is to think of a little black dress – it will always make you look thinner (and so will dark colors worn on the lips). A healthy, natural flush color is perfect and flattering on all skin tones. This is the color that appears on your cheeks when you pinch your cheeks. It is usually a soft rose or pale cherry color. You might think something in the peach tone is more ‘natural’ but if you think about it – when you run around the block – you don’t naturally blush in bronze or peach colors. A bronzer can make you looked sun kissed when applied properly to the areas of the face that would naturally get sun (forehead, cheeks, chin and nose). Now that you have determined the best makeup colors for your skin, the next lesson will concentrate on application techniques. Lesson #2 Five Minutes To Flawless Skin How long should it take you to get a clean and natural look? With the right products, it should take you no longer than five minutes to achieve the perfect glow. The problem is, most of the time, the products you are using do not give you the performance you demand, so you end up using more products thus taking more time. The more products you own, the more difficult it becomes to make a decision about what or how to wear them. From a makeup artist standpoint, you should require no more than five products, a few more to glam up your look (if you choose). Your five beauty products should consist of multi-tasking, fool-proof essentials – not trendy items that will lose their appeal in a season or two. One you have your essentials, it is vital that you know how to use them. Very rarely does a woman actually read the instructions or label - or if she gets her instructions by reading a magazine article, very often the model in the photo looks nothing like herself and therefore, the makeup application does not look as good as the photo. Minerals give you the freedom to wear less because the pigments come from natural earth minerals – and look flattering on most every part of the face. Example: Your bronzer or blush would look beautiful as an eye shadow and you can add a bit of gloss to your eye shadow to become a lovely lipstick color. After years of working with thousands of products, here is what this makeup artist has boiled the essentials down to:
Lesson # 3 Daytime to Glamtime in No Time! Once you have the secrets to achieving a daytime clean and natural look, it becomes easy to add a few more steps for a more evening or glam look. Start with the steps outlined in lesson #2. Fill in the eyebrows slightly with either a soft pencil, loose powder or brow gel. This will add definition to the face and frame the eye. Take your accent color (the color opposite of your eye color) and add it to the eyelid of the eye. This will bring attention to the color of your eye and add brightness. Add a soft pencil around the eye area – minerals are great because you can often find a color that can be used for the eyes, brows and lips! Add two coats of mascara. Mineral mascara contains no tar (tar is the primary ingredient in traditional mascara and is what causes the eye lashes to become brittle and fall out. If you are wearing a lip gloss only, add a vibrant lip color to your lips in the same shade. Viola! Five more steps, five more minutes. The beauty of mineral makeup is that the longer you wear it, the better it looks – and if you are wearing a glam look for a special occasion, you won’t have to worry about it melting or wearing off. Mineral Makeup USA was founded by media makeup artists who, after having discovered the best mineral makeup available on the market today – decided to make it available to their clientele. After a few applications, it will take you no longer than five minutes to apply these and soon time, it will take you less. In the next lesson, you will discover how to take this clean and natural look into an evening look in less than five minutes more! |
