What is the difference between the makeup I purchase at the department or drug store and mineral makeup?
Colorescience mineral makeup is the purest form of mineral makeup available because it contains no chemicals or dyes, fragrance, petroleum or mineral oil.

What is mineral makeup exactly?
The term ‘mineral makeup’ was coined by Diane Ranger, the owner of Colorescience back in 1977 (her first mineral makeup brainchild was Bare Escentuals). After researching the history of makeup, dating back to the times of Cleopatra, she discovered that the Egyptians used minerals for sun protection and that is what gave her the inspiration for using minerals as makeup. The raw materials are minerals (rocks) from the earth. Colorescience raw materials are sourced from all over the world. Different rocks offer difference clarity and coverage.

Isn’t all mineral makeup the same?
Absolutely NOT! Contrary to popular belief, there is not one lab that produces all mineral makeup. What makes mineral makeup different is the quality of the raw materials along with the recipe. Too much of one ingredient can make the formula too shiny or too heavy, which will make it appear cakey on the skin. Diane has been perfecting and refining her original formula for over 30 years to give you the best formula available on the market today.

I tried mineral makeup once before and it looked very chalky on the skin, why did this happen?
Again, the mineral makeup recipe has to be the correct amount of minerals to give a no makeup look. In addition, if you try to apply mineral makeup like a traditional makeup (via a powder puff and sifter applicator) you will be applying way too much product on the face and it will look heavy.

How do I know what color to choose from a website?

The beauty of mineral makeup is that because it is free of chemicals, it won’t turn ‘orange’. Often you can wear more than one color of mineral makeup. The ownes of the Mineral Makeup USA website is a professional makeup artist that has worked with Colorescience for many years and has used Colorescience minerals on hundreds of clients. She can recommend the perfect shade by the answers to a few questions. In addition, we have included a ‘celebrity look alike’ guide which makes shade selection easy. Simply select your skin tone and we will send you the perfect color selection.

How do I get the minerals out of the brush?
Each loose mineral makeup brush arrives to you in an aluminum tin and inside the tin are explicit instructions on how to prime the brush.
Directions: Remove the protective cap and pull back the protective brush covering. Make a fist with your left hand and with the brush in your right hand press the bristles onto the middle knuckle so the bristles fan out (like a hoola skirt). Apply in small circular motions until pigment releases (in about 10-15 circles). Brush released pigment into the brush. The brush is now primed and ready to apply to the face. NOTE: You do not have to repeat this process every single time. Although you will not see a lot of pigment released with each use, the brush is designed to release the right amount of product to give a natural look.

How do I prevent my brush from clogging?
Keeping the brush clean is the best way to prevent it from clogging. To clean the brush, use the Colorescience aromatherapy cleanser, which is free from chemicals. Spray a small amount onto a paper towel and hold the brush in an upright position (bristles facing the ceiling) and wipe the brush back and forth on the paper towel. DO NOT POSITION THE BRUSH IN AN UPSIDE DOWN POSITION, WHICH IS BRISTLES FACING TOWARDS THE FLOOR AS THIS WILL CAUSE THE POWDER TO MIX WITH THE MOISTURE IN THE BRUSH CLEANER AND BECOME CLOGGED.
The second thing to remember is that the brush cannot be applied to a damp or wet face. Moisturizer must be completely absorbed and perspiration must be wiped off the face before applying loose minerals.

How long will loose minerals last?
The best thing about Colorescience mineral makeup is that once applied, it will last for a minimum of 8 hours, so you will not need to re-apply throughout the day, with the exception of the finishing powder, which is used to control and absorb oil.
General guidelines are as follows:

Mineral Primer (Line Tamer and Wild To Mild) Approx. 2 months
Loose Foundations : 6-9 months
Loose Blush: 9-12 months
Loose Bronzer: 6-9 months
Loose Finishing Powder: 3 months
Mineral Compact: 2 months
Sunforgettable Powder SPF 30: 1-3 months

What determines how much coverage I get with the mineral makeup?
It depends on a couple of factors. First, the type of product you select and secondly, how you apply that product. If you want a natural, sheer to medium coverage, go with the loose powder in the brush. If you want a medium to full coverage, the compact will be your best option. Many clients have both because there are times when you want fuller coverage, such as a special event, or when being photographed. Because the compact offers the greatest coverage per square inch, it is best to apply sparingly with a brush until you get the hang of how much to apply. If you do apply the compact with the sponge, apply to the outer portion of the face and work in (as opposed to applying in the T-Zone and working outward. This will prevent too much product being applied to the face.
